This research was presented at the International Conference on Education and Workforce Development (ICEWD) 2017 in Abu Dhabi on April 4th with the above poster.
Here is the abstract:
The aim of this study is to ascertain, from the students’ perspective, the effectiveness of using social media, primarily the Facebook Fan Page, as a learning tool at a Dubai university. Pedagogical research about social media is still in its nascent stage and the use of the Facebook Fan Page in the academic context, to our knowledge, has not yet been studied. It is against this backdrop that we seek to address the gap in literature. Students in an undergraduate business ethics course were tasked with creating a Facebook Fan Page in groups to explain, through the application of philosophical course theories, why cheating in the academic context is unethical. A 25-question paper survey was administered to the students after the submission of their assignment to examine how well the Facebook Fan Page assignment contributed to their learning. In addition to the five-point Likert-scale questions, students were also asked four open-ended questions for their feedback on the social media assignment. Results indicate that the assignment improved students’ understanding of and interest in the course content and that they generally learned more in this assignment than in traditional methods of learning, with many students agreeing that more social media and technology should be incorporated into the educational curriculum.
